Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to investigate the influence of swine-waste biochar (SB) on the early-age characteristics of cement pastes. Using a water/binder ratio of 0.28, SB modified cement pastes were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), flow, and Vicat setting tests. Notably, SB reduced the flow and initial setting times of SB modified cement pastes. Due to its porous and negatively charged surfaces, capillary water was adsorbed into the pores of the carbonaceous SB and this reduced the flow of the SB modified cement pastes.........Keyword: Cement, biochar, swine-waste, carboxylates, setting, flow. ×

In this thesis Power Quality Improvement is examined using Passive shunt filter, TCR and TSC combination. Today's electric power systems are connected to many non-linear loads. The characteristics of these non-linear loads inevitably change the sinusoidal nature of the a.c. power current, resulting in the flow of harmonic current in the a.c. power system. Use of shunt passive filters in the reduction of harmonics offers the advantages of more simplicity, high reliability, high efficiency and low cost. The uncontrolled ac-dc converter suffers from operating problems of poor power factor, injection of harmonics into the ac mains, variations in dc link voltage of input ac supply, equipment overheating due to harmonic current absorption, voltage distortion due to the voltage drop caused by harmonic currents flowing through system impedances etc.The combinations of passive filters with TCR and TSC are designed and analyzed to improve the power quality at ac mains. This scheme has resulted in improved power quality with overall reduced rating of passive components used in front end ac-dc converters with R-L load. Keywords: ............... ×

This paper infers about optimization technique for various problems in transportation engineering. While for pavement engineering, maintenance is priority issue, for traffic it is signalling which is priority issue. Many optimization methods are discussed though given importance of genetic algorithm approach. While optimization techniques nearly approach practicality, research works are on for modern optimization techniques which not only adds ease of structure but also provide compatibility to modern day problems encountered in transportation engineering. Some of the modern tools are discussed to employ optimization techniques which are quite simple to use and implement once it is calibrated to the desired objective. Keywords: ............ ×

Theoretical study of a series of isomeric α-, β-, γ-, δ-, ε-RuCl2L2 (L= azpy, tazpy, 4mazpy, 5mazpy) complexes is carried out using the density functional theory (DFT) method at B3LYP/LanL2DZ level. The effects of the ligand on the electronic structures and related properties, e.g. the components and the energies of some frontier molecular orbital, the net charge populations of some main atoms of the complexes, the effect of substituent methyl as well as the Structure Activity-Relationships (SARs) of the complexes were investigated. The results show that the sterical differences between isomeric structures of these complexes have serious influence on their electronic structures and related properties. First and foremost, the geometric configuration of δ-Cl and γ-Cl isomers must be advantageous to the conjugative ligand to intercalate between DNA-base-pairs in comparison with α-Cl, β-Cl and ε-Cl complexes. Generally in the analysis and design of multi-story building frame it is assumed that the base is fixed but in actual the structure is ultimately supported on soil which is flexible in nature. This flexibility of soil may vary due to load-settlement characteristics of soil, variation in soil strata below the foundation level, seasonal variation of soil property etc. The flexible nature of soil causes differential settlement between foundations on application of loads which in turn redistribute the structural forces as well as design. The present paper attempts to acknowledge the effect of soil flexibility in analysis and design of structure. The present paper investigates the facile production of electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers containing either micro-sized polymer or hybrid capsules, using a needleless electrospinning system. Oil-containing microcapsules with diameters of around 3 or 10 μm, respectively, were produced via an oil-in-water miniemulsion and mixed with a PVA solution. Appropriate adjustment of electrospinning parameters enabled a controlled assembly of PVA nanofibers into a network containing microcapsules, without damaging their integrity. The PVA nanofibers have diameters in a range of 200-300 nm and showed good homogeneity. The introduction of microcapsules caused an increase in the PVA nanofiber diameters probably due to an increase in the solution viscosity. The production of such self-supported and loaded microcontainers could be of high interest for various applications..Keywords: Electrospinning, hybrid, microcapsule, nanofiber, polymer ×

Methods of solving the identified environmental problems, considering mathematical rigorous alternative assessment of environmental component process using fuzzy logic and approximate reasoning, are described by various researchers. To illustrate how such a computational intelligence approach would work in performing an assessment, various artificial techniques have been described. Fuzzy system technique for analysis of environmental components differentiates the approach from those techniques used in the past. It takes advantage of advanced computational intelligence techniques such as fuzzy sets and logic, for quantifying and manipulating in a mathematically rigorous way, subjective, inherently uncertain or imprecise values and concepts. This paper put forth the use of fuzzy sets in field of environmental engineering.Keyword: Fuzzy set theory, environmental components, Artificial intelligence, and environmental variables. ×

Phase transition temperatures of azomethine esters: 3-hydroxy-4-{[(4-iodophenyl)imino]methyl}phenyl alkanoates (Cn-1H2n-1COO-, n = 8, 18) are identified using Legendre moments or Legendre moment coefficients. As a function of temperature, Liquid crystal textures are recorded from the arthroscopic mode of Polarizing Optical Microscope having the attachment of hot stage and camera. In this paper, Legendre moments are computed from the brightness information of liquid crystal textures using MATLAB software. The changes in the textural features with respect to temperature bring the variations in the brightness values, are useful to identify the phase transitions. The abrupt changes in the Legendre moment curve gives information to understand the transition temperatures of liquid crystals. Energy efficiency and energy preservation are two primary worldwide concerns in current reality. Thus, sustainability encompasses those two issues, giving that as a general term refers to the capacity to endure. In architecture sustainability describes environmentally conscious design techniques, minimizing negative environmental impact and enhancing efficiency in the use of materials, energy and space. In every level of design and construction of a building, environmental issues should be taken into account. Each specific decision and choice may have consequences for the environment. Sustainability through the proper and sound use of materials is an obvious practice. A large number of RC frame buildings have been built in India in recent years. Huge number of similarly designed and constructed buildings exist in the various towns and cities situated in moderate to severe seismic zones of the country. Analysis and design of such buildings for static forces is a routine affair these days because of availability of affordable computers and specialized programs which can be used for the analysis. On the other hand, dynamic analysis is a time consuming process and requires additional input related to mass of the structure, and an understanding of structural dynamics for interpretation of analytical results. Reinforced Concrete (RC) frame buildings are most common type of constructions in urban India, which are subjected to several types of forces during their lifetime, such as static forces due to dead and live loads and dynamic forces due to earthquake........Keywords: RC structure, seismic analysis, Equivalent Static, Response Spectrum and time history analysis, Displacement, Acceleration, base shear. ×

This article developed a model of time series wave where during the formulation velocity equations as the result of Laplace theory was done. As the result of this method, the continuity equation was substituted to momentum equation, or in other words momentum equation produces a velocity controlled by continuity equation, since Laplace equation comes from continuity equation. Using this method, the concept of calculation velocity at the momentum equation was also developed where calculation velocity is equal to average velocity of the depth of the Airy long wave equation. Keywords: Continuity equation, Laplace equation , Momentum equation, Nonlinear wave. ×

In this paper, the tip clearance effects on flow field of a low speed centrifugal compressor without and with partial shroud (PS) fitted on to the rotor blade tip at three values of tip clearance, viz. = 2.2%, 5.1% and 7.9% of rotor blade height at the exit at three flow coefficients, namely, = 0.18, 0.28, and 0.34, was studied. Based on the theory of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), performance curves and parameter distributions of the compressor were obtained from the 3-D numerical simulation by using ANSYS CFX 15.0. The centrifugal compressor in aerodynamic requirement is that edge velocities along the impeller channel passage surfaces like hub, shroud, pressure and suction surfaces vary smoothly without sudden decelerations, which cause flow separation leading to losses. Using the periodic boundaries and defined flow conditions at inflow / exit flow and blade rotations, the turbulent viscous flow between blade channels are computed............Keywords: Centrifugal compressor, Flow coefficient, Partial shroud (PS) attached to the rotor blade tip, Streamlines, passage wake. ×

Manual method of seed planting, results in low seed placement, spacing efficiencies and serious back ache for the farmer which limits the size of field that can be planted. The cost price of imported planters has gone beyond the purchasing power of most of our farmers. Peasant farmers can do much to increase food production especially grains, if drudgery can be reduced or totally removed from their planting operations. To achieve the best performance from a seed planter, the above limits are to be optimized by proper design and selection of the components required on the machine to suit the needs of crops. Need of rice trans-planter machine is growing nowadays because it unique features seeding in well sequence and in well manner........Keywords: Rice planter, cost minimization, design &development. ×

Floods are phenomena that become more frequent and more intense due to anthropogenic activities such as poor land use, improper waste management, uncontrolled urbanization, industrialization … In developing countries, the drainage systems are most often limited (if not absent), inadequate or not adapted. Most of the storm drains are regularly filled with solid materials that are collected from the environment and conveyed by runoff. Waste management in developing countries is very poor and important fractions of the wastes produced are abandoned in nature thereby impacting severely on the environment. The Abiergué watershed was targeted to study the process of the hydrological transformation of rainfall into runoff that conveys solid waste within a drainage system. The aim of this research was to develop a model that will enable the simulation of waste flow with respect to a specific rainfall pattern......Keywords: Drainage system, models, runoff, solid domestic waste, soil sediment ×

The issue of power quality has gained popularity in the recent years because of the widespread use of power electronic devices, larger inter-connected load networks and widespread use of non-conventional source of electrical energy like wind power, solar power etc. in the power system. The deterioration of the power quality may cause unwanted losses in the system, poor efficiency, interference with the communication lines, and faulty operation of devices and even may cause fault in some devices. In this paper the power quality issue because of the presence of non-linear load connected to the electric grid is discussed and an effort has been made to improve the power quality of the system using a device known as Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). For this the intelligent controlled UPQC is developed and used with the Grid supply connected to the Non-linear load and percentage Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of voltage and current waveforms is measured in order to determine the power quality at different locations in the system.........Keywords: RC Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC), Proportional Integral controller (PI controller), Active power filters (APF), Insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), Artificial neural network (ANN), Pulse width modulation (PWM), Phase locked loop (PLL) ×

The normal concrete has a density of 2500 kg/ m3 which makes it difficult to handle at the time of construction and increasing the sectional dimensions of structural elements. The major contributions to the density of concrete is the high specific gravity of coarse and fine aggregate. In the present study, an attempt has been made to replace both coarse and fine aggregate by lighter weight material to achieve concrete of lighter density. Coarse aggregate was replaced by cinder in various percentages and fine aggregate was replaced by fly ash granules completely. M20 grade of concrete was designed as per IS10262-2009. Steel fibres at 1% by weight of cement was added to impart tensile strength. The cement was replaced by GGBS by 30 % in weight to add strength. Compression, split tensile and flexural strength were conducted at 28 days. It was observed from the results that the reduction in strength after 40% replacement of coarse aggregate was nearly unchanged. Keywords: Cinder, Flyash Granules, Coarse Aggregate, Fine Aggregate, Strength ×

Abstract:
Suspension design of an ATV is presented. At present, the vehicle is equipped with Parallel Short Long Arm at front and 3 Link Trailing Arm at the rear. As present vehicle's stability is low, modifications are made to the design. The stability of an ATV majorly depends on the Suspension system. By modifying the rear suspension design and also by reducing the un-sprung mass, stability is greatly improved. The modifications are done by considering other dynamic parameters. The main objective was to make the vehicle controllably oversteer. Rear H-Arm with single camber link is selected as it has minimal members and the geometry reduces the rear roll center position which greatly improves stability.Keyword: Baja suspension system, H-Arm, independent suspension, parallel short long arm ×

This paper proposes, the retrieving satellite cloud images from satellite cloud database images using the texture features. The traditional image retrieval technique is inefficient in retrieving these images. Content-based image retrieval is an approach from data mining community which provides the solution of managing this huge quantity of data. In this research, a Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system has been developed using texture features from the satellite image repository. The system allows the user to search for an image on the basis of any texture features. The texture features are extracted using gray level co-occurrence matrix method and Euclidean distance metric is used to compute the similarity between the images. The system is robust as it provides search based on the multiple features and it can also retrieve the images in which are rotated with an angle 'ϴ'. The performance of the system was evaluated by analyzing the retrieval results using precision..Keywords: Image retrieval, texture feature , similarity, Euclidean distance, Content-based image retrieval ×

This paper presents the comparative study between various PAPR reduction technique such as partial transmit sequence, DFT spreading, Clipping and filtering. The peak to average power ratio of the time domain envelope is an important parameter at the physical layer of the communication system using OFDM signaling. The signals must maintain a specified average energy level in the channel to obtain the desired Bit-error- rate. The peak signal level relative to that average defines the maximum dynamic range that must be accommodated by the components in the signal flow path to support the desired average. High Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) for OFDM system is still a demanding area and difficult issue. The radio transmitter stations for covering and getting enough transmitted power in their desired area has to use High Power Amplifier (HPA). If the high power amplifier doesn't work in linear region, it can cause the out-of-band power to be kept under the specified limits. This condition can cause inefficient amplification and expensive transmitters, thus it is necessary to investigate PAPR reduction techniques for OFDM system.......Keywords: RC ........ ×

The control factors are Area of the evaporator with annular fin(A), temperature difference of the evaporator space (dT), and relative humidity inside the cold room(RH). The Taguchi S/N ratio analysis have used as an optimization technique. Larger the better type S/N ratio have used for calculating the optimum level of control parameters, because it is a maximization problem. Analysis of variance ANOVA was also performed on the test results to find out the significant control factors..Keywords: Taguchi orthogonal array, convective heat transfer co-efficient, annular fin area and arrangement, regression analysis, graphical representation of control factors with heat transfer, S/N ratio analysis, ANOVA analysis.. ×

The aim of this article is to present morphological studies on the tensile fractured specimens of novel liquid rubber obtained from the pyrolysis of scrap rubber. Such a study is crucial for gaining useful insight into the toughening mechanisms existing in rubber modified systems. A DGEBA based epoxy resin was first modified with varying concentrations (0-15 wt. %) of the liquid rubber. Dogbone shaped specimens of the cast plaques of the modified epoxies were tested under uniaxial tensile loading. The fracture surface was elucidated with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that biphasic morphology characterized with continuous epoxy phase and microvoids distributed throughout the epoxy domain develop in the modified epoxies. Cavitation of rubber particles under crack tip stresses is the reason behind development of these microvoids. The diameter of these microvoids were analyzed using the image analysis technique and was observed to increase with the concentration of rubber.......Keywords: Cavitation, Rubber toughened epoxy, Scanning Electron Microscopy ×

This paper describes the experimental destructive testing of spiral bevel gears used in automotive differential gear box. The experimental testing is aimed at early detection of failure of spiral bevel gears during operation by continuously recording and comparing the sound and vibration characteristics during testing. For this purpose, a special fatigue test rig has been developed which can apply dynamic rotational loads with the help of a three phase AC electric motor. The accelerometers located on the drive side (crown pinion) and the slave side (crown wheel) measures the vibration characteristics and an acoustic sensor place near the gears in mesh measures noise levels. The acquired data in time domain are then converted to frequency domain by using a FFT. The signature of failure of pinion was obtained. Three pairs of gears were tested a new gear pair, a used gear pair and a gear pair after breakage of one teeth of pinion........Keywords: Differential gearbox, Endurance testing, Fatigue life, Finite element analysis, Noise, Spiral bevel gears, Vibration ×

In wireless sensor networks and other engineering systems, there are situations wherein some delays occur in data transmission and some measurements might be randomly missing. This would cause inaccuracies in Kalman filter or its equivalent algorithms, when used for target tracking. In this paper four alternative algorithms are studied and the modifications to include the state delay and randomly missing measurements are provided. Especially:i) the gain fusion, H-infinity a posteriori, H-infinity risk sensitive filter, and H-infinity global filtering algorithms are modified, and evaluated for sensor data fusion scenario using numerical simulations carried out in MATLAB; and ii) a nonlinear observer based on the continuous time data fusion filter is presented, and asymptotic convergence result is derived using Lyapunov energy functional; these two aspects are the novel contribution of this paper. Keywords: Data fusion, delayed states, randomly missing measurements, gain fusion filter, H-infinity a posteriori filter, risk sensitive filter, H-infinity global fusion filter, observer, Lyapunov function ×

Indian industries use water in a very high quantity as compared to other countries' water usage. Inefficient water use by industries in India creates a lot of problems. This quantity could be reduced to a minimal by recycling the water after sufficient treatment. This work aims at sufficient in-situ treatment of wastewater and recycling of water for low-grade applications in the industry. Complete destruction of the contaminant is possible using inexhaustible, free source of energy from sunlight thus consuming very less primary energy for its operation. In the present work, a raft supported on a centrally located pile has been analyzed by through a Finite Element Model to predict the interaction behavior pile-raft and soil in piled raft foundation composite. Attempt has been made to study the effects of soil modulus, raft to pile width ratio, pile slenderness ratio and raft thickness on load sharing characteristics of piled raft foundation. Analysis showed an increase in axial load on pile with higher pile slenderness ratio for a fixed raft to pile width ratio. Whereas, higher raft thickness does not show much effect on load sharing. Side resistance along the pile length increased up to the critical depth of pile. Radius of influence of pile also seems to higher for higher pile slenderness ratios for a thinner raft.Keyword: Piled raft foundation, Finite element analysis, soil structure interaction ×

As we know that the meta-materials have the unusual electromagnetic properties having negative refractive index. The negative index material is affected with their optical parameters like refractive index, permittivity, permeability and thickness of the materials. The PC1 and PC2 are two photonic crystals containing NIM with different thickness ratio. When these two PCs are combined and make a heterostructure of PC1/PC2 of different thicknesses ratio, then the band gap of such heterostructure is enlarged due to the band gap of PC1 and PC2.
