Abstract:
Reinforced concrete structures often require strengthening to increase their capacity to sustain additional loads, due to change in use that resulted in additional live loads, deterioration of the load carrying elements, design errors, construction problems during erection, aging of structure itself or upgrading to confirm to current code requirements. These situations may require additional concrete elements or the entire concrete structure to be strengthened, repaired or retrofitted. Common methods for strengthening columns include concrete jacketing, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jacketing and steel jacketing. All these methods have been shown to effectively increase the axial load capacity of columns.........Keyword: Axially loaded column, Retrofitting, steel jacketing, epoxy resign, Cracks ×

Networking in computers enables sharing of information by interconnecting the computing devices. The sharing of information is possible through transmission media. The transmission media is classified as wired or wireless. Wired media have limitation in geography. But wireless is not bounded by geography. In the wireless world the first wireless technology was infrared and it was a very slow technology. So, inventions were continued to find a better wireless technology, finally we got Bluetooth, Wi-Fi ,WI-MAX and Gi-Fi. In this paper we discussed about different Wired and Wireless Technologies and given a proposed idea to extend the limit of Gi-Fi beyond 10 meters. Keywords:Bluetooth, CMOS, GiFi, Repeater, WiFi, WiMax. ×

As known from very upsetting experiences, poorly designed elevated water tanks were heavily damaged or collapsed during earthquakes. This might be due to the lack of knowledge regarding the behaviour of supporting system of the tank, and also due to improper selection of geometry of staging patterns. For certain proportions of the tank and the structure, the sloshing of the water during earthquake may be one of the dominant factors.Dynamic analysis of tank containing liquid is complex involving fluid-structure interaction. In this paper, the seismic behavioural effect of circular elevated water tank is studied for specific capacity of tank for various staging arrangements in plan, variation in number of periphery columns and variation in number of stages in elevation............Keywords:Inadequate design, Elevated Circular Water Tank, Two mass model, Frame Staging, RSM, Optimization of Columns. ×

Acidic and basic are two extremes that describe chemicals, just like hot and cold are two extremes that describe temperature. Mixing acids and bases can cancel out their extreme effects; much like mixing hot and cold water can even out the water temperature. A substance that is neither acidic nor basic is neutral. The ph of the water in betul block is increasing year by year and day by day. It was observed that there are 0.5% increase in the ph of water in betul block. The optimum pH will vary in different supplies according to the composition of the water and the nature of the construction materials used in the distribution system, but is often in the range 6.5–9.5. Extreme pH values can result from accidental spills, treatment breakdowns, and insufficiently cured cement mortar pipe linings. No health-based guideline value is proposed for pH.Keywords:............................ ×

The limited mechanical properties of Al and its alloys adversely affect its applications in automobile and aerospace industries. This remains one of the major concern in the fabrication to suit its application in recent days. The main aim of the present work is to improve the fracture toughness of the Al matrix composite . A composite with Al 6061 alloy as matrix and Zirconium Oxide as reinforcement is fabricated by stir casting process. The specimens were prepared according to ASTM standards and fracture toughness, tensile and hardness tests were performed and the properties were investigated. Zirconium oxide is selected as a reinforcement because of its ability to influence the microstructure of the Al 6061 alloy to improve the fracture toughness. The fracture toughness is highest at 6% reinforcement of ZrO2 and hardness is found to be more at 4% reinforcement. Keywords:Fracture Toughness, Zirconium Oxide, Al 6061, SENB, Stir Casting, Metal Matrix Composite. ×

Materials and Methods: We designed a questionnaire to assess the incidence, the time elapsed and the reason of total device failure. Medical-surgical data were collected from children who received Med-El cochlear implants since the start of the National Cochlear Implant Program in 2001. Results: There were 256 patients included. Failure Rate (6,64%) and Cumulative Survival Rate (95,31%) at 5 years were calculated. The majority of the hard and soft failures were encountered in Pulsar devices. Improving the properties of soil by stabilization is considered as a means of fulfilling design criteria. Stabilization is usually performed to improve material properties of soil such as strength, stiffness, and permeability. The use of new materials for soil strengthening is crucial for geotechnical engineering, especially in foundation construction. Experiments were conducted using resins with different epoxy resin-to-water (ER/W) ratios. . The results show that by increasing the resin in the soil, the maximum dry density increases, and the optimum water content decreases in the compaction tests. The results indicate that the epoxy resins improve the physical and mechanical properties of soil significantly, and if successfully grouted into a formation, the resins could provide a suitable solution for the stabilization of foundation materialKeywords:Resin, Thonakkalclay,Optimum moisture content, Maximum dry density, UCC ×

Cloud computing is new way of economical and efficient storage. The single data mart storage system is a less secure because data remain under a single data mart. This can lead to data loss due to different causes like hacking, server failure etc. If an attacker chooses to attack a specific client, then he can aim at a fixed cloud provider, try to have access to the client's information. This makes an easy job of the attackers, both inside and outside attackers get the benefit of using data mining to a great extent. Inside attackers refer to malicious employees at a cloud provider. Thus single data mart storage architecture is the biggest security threat concerning data mining on cloud, so in this paper present the secure replication approach that encrypt based on biocrypt and replicate the data in distributed data mart storage system. This approach involves the encryption, replication and storage of data.Keywords:................... ×

The impact of this constraint might have a severe consequence on the performance of transparent optical networks especially in terms of rejection ratio ant it is especially severe when traffic demands are unpredictable and characterized by random arrivals and departures. To alleviate the impact of these constraints, either wavelength conversion or traffic rerouting can be used. Since, in the foreseeable future, wavelength conversion is expected to remain an expensive technology, traffic rerouting is an attractive alternative solution..........Keywords:Active Rerouting, Hybrid Rerouting, Lightpath ReRouting (LRR), Passive Rerouting, Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA), Wavelength Continuity Constraint, Wavelength ReRouting (WRR), WDM Transparent Optical Networks ×

Abstract:
This paper presents an application of artificial neural networks for short-term times series electrical load forecasting. An adaptive learning algorithm is derived from system stability to ensure the convergence of training process. Historical data of hourly power load as well as hourly wind power generation are sourced from European Open Power System Platform. The simulation demonstrates that errors steadily decrease in training with the adaptive learning factor starting at different initial value and errors behave volatile with constant learning factors with different values.Keyword: Adaptive learning, neural network, short term load forecast, stability analysis ×

Knowledge plays more and more important role in the heavy competition environment. In order to facilitate the inter-enterpriseknowledge sharing, the knowledge map in each enterprise needs to be integrated. In the paper, the knowledge map integration approach is proposed. Firstly, the explicit knowledge is integrated. In the integration, the documents in the original knowledge map are classified into the corresponding categories in the main knowledge map according to the relevance. The unclassified documents are clustered to derive new categories. Afterwards, experts, which are the owner of implicit knowledge, are classified based on the registered documents or the documents in the original categories. Finally, the ranking of experts in each category are determined. The illustrative example shows the proposed approach is feasible and performances well. Keywords:knowledge map, knowledgemanagement, expert yellow pages ×

This article investigates the impact of controlled imbalance levels on assembly lines, and its effects on two important performance indicators: throughput and work in process (WIP) level. Using a five workstations line simulation, with different degrees of imbalance and different configurations, we could conclude that there is a relationship between extra capacity added to non-constraints and average WIP level and line throughput. Simulation revealed that, using bowl shape configuration, the higher the imbalance, the higher the throughput, with less WIP. These results allow proposing new studies to create a framework for evaluating the feasibility of investments in extra capacity vis-a-vis those gains in resources efficiencyKeywords:Assembly lines, capacity, simulation, unbalanced. ×

There are many researchers who have studied the relevance feedback in the literature of content based image retrieval (CBIR) community, but none of CBIR search engines support it because of scalability, effectiveness and efficiency issues. In this, we had implemented an integrated relevance feedback for retrieving of web images. Here, we had concentrated on integration of both textual features (TF) and visual features (VF) based relevance feedback (RF), simultaneously we also tested them individually. The TFRF employs and effective search result clustering (SRC) algorithm to get salient phrases. Then a new user interface (UI) is proposed to support RF. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is scalable, effective and accurated. Keywords:Content based image retrieval (CBIR), relevance feedback (RF), search result clustering (SRC), web image retrieval and integrated TVRF ×

The absorbable polyacid is one of the most used and studied materials in tissue engineering. This work synthesized a poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) through ring-opening polymerization and produced nanofibers by the electrospinning process. The PLLA was analyzed by FTIR and the cytotoxicity was evaluated by the MTT assay and Live/Dead®. The hemocompatibility was tested by platelet adhesion and hemolytic activity assay. The tests were performed in contact with human mesenchymal cells at varying times. The high rates of cell viability and proliferation shown by MTT and Live/Dead® tests demonstrate that this PLLA is a non-toxic material and the hemocompatibility assay revealed that the biomaterial was also biocompatible. It was achieved as well the successful production of electrospinning nanofibers, which can be converted for specific biomedical applications in the future. Keywords:Biomaterials; material synthesis; PLLA; cell culture; MTT test; tissue-engineering; biofabrication ×

Intermodulation distortion has been a major source of linearity when a power amplifier is used for multichannel systems in wireless communication. Since, distortion products appear close to original input carriers they need to be cancelled out so that information reaches unaltered and distortionless at the destination. In this paper, feedforward technique has been selected to obtain maximum intermodulation distortion reduction. To demonstrate linearity improvement, along with IMD measurement, carrier to IMD power ratio (C/I) and intercept points are also evaluated. Later on, the feedforward power amplifier is tested by sweeping input power within a specified range and graphs for IMD and intercept points are derived. The results show that the feedforward linearized power amplifier achieves best results when operated at input power levels around and above 12 dBm............Keywords:Carrier to IMD power ratio (C/I), Feedforward (FF), Intercept point (IP), Intermodulation distortion (IMD), Linearization, Nonlinearity, Power amplifier (PA).. ×

Thirty-five factors that affected construction productivity gathered from literature and were found to be significant following a questionnaire survey. Twelve factors were the most significant factors that impact construction productivity (independent variables). An productivity performance index (PPI) was established (the dependent variable). Biometric technology is a science that used to verify or identify the individual based on physical and/or behavioral traits. Although biometric systems are considered more secure than other traditional methods such as password, or key, they also have many limitations such as noisy image, or spoof attack. One of the solutions to overcome these limitations, is by applying a multibiometric system. Multibiometric system has a significant effect in improving the performance of both security and accuracy of the system. It also can alleviate the spoof attacks and reduce the fail to enroll error. A multi-sample is one implementations of the multibiometric systems. A two dimensional technique has been studied numerically to predict the heat transfer from two different cylinders in tandem arrangement (one is circular and the other is elliptical) using finite element technique with RNG k-ε turbu-lent model, taking into consideration the effect of gap ratio (L/Deq ) and Reynolds number , where the distance be-tween the centers of cylinders is L (L=30 mm and 37 mm), the equivalent diameter of cylinder is Deq=22.5mm and the range of Reynolds number is 2x103< Reeq < 21x103 .The commercial CFD software FLUENT was used to get the thermofluid characteristics (temperature, velocity, kinetic energy and pressure contours ,coefficient of friction , heat transfer coefficient , Stanton number …… etc) of the flow around cylinders. The dependency of the heat trans-fer coefficient, Stanton number (Sta), pressure drop, and friction factor for circular and elliptical cylinders on the gap ratio is clear from the results..............Key words:Circular and Elliptical Cylinders, Tandem Arrangement, Numerical Solution, Heat Transfer Rate. ×

Most rivers in urban areas of developing countries are the destinations of effluents discharged from industries. This is the case of River Choumlou (in Bafoussam-West Region, Cameroon) which receives all discharges from "Brasseries du Cameroun", Bafoussam branch. The objective of this work was to determine the level of organic contaminants in water samples and to treat the polluted samples using the non-thermal gliding arc plasma. Non-thermal plasma consists of charged particles, radicals and excited molecules. The aim was to show the interest of such a process for cleaning up of surface waters (real effluent) and to cope with the protection of our environment. Due to the fact that pollution of streams and rivers from the discharge of sewage and industrial wastes poses a major problem to the environment, the researchers were particularly interested in investigating the oxidizing and acidifying properties of non-thermal plasma on polluted surface water............Keywords:Environment, Surface water, Pollution, Gliding arc plasma, Degradation. ×

In this paper, a new radix-3 algorithm for realization of discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of length N = 3m (m = 1, 2, 3,...) is presented. The DFT of length N can be realized from three DFT sequences, each of length N/3. If the input signal has length N, direct calculation of DFT requires O (N2) complex multiplications (4N2 real multiplications) and some additions. This radix-3 algorithm reduces the number of multiplications required for realizing DFT. For example, the number of complex multiplications required for realizing 9-point DFT using the proposed radix-3 algorithm is 60. Thus, saving in time can be achieved in the realization of proposed algorithm. Keywords:Discrete Fourier transform, fast Fourier transform, radix-3 algorithm ×

MIMO-OFDM is an attractive interface for the next generation WLANs, WMAN, 4G and 5G mobile cellular systems. However the performance of the MIMO-OFDM systems is affected by Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR). PAPR is the main disadvantage associated with the MIMO-OFDM systems. So far, many techniques have been proposed to reduce the value of PAPR but high PAPR for MIMO-OFDM systems is still a demanding area and a different issue. In this paper, a hybrid VLM precoded SLM scheme using Clipping & Filtering has been proposed to reduce PAPR in MIMO-OFDM systems. And it has been observed that the proposed scheme has achieved a significant gain in PAPR reduction without increasing the system complexity and affecting the error performance of the system. Keywords: MIMO-OFDM, PAPR, SLM. ×

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are metals that "remember" their original shapes. SMAs are useful for such things as actuators which are materials that "change shape, stiffness, position, natural frequency, and other mechanical characteristics in response to temperature or electromagnetic fields" The potential uses for SMAs especially as actuators have broadened the spectrum of many scientific fields. The study of the history and development of SMAs can provide an insight into a material involved in cutting-edge technology. The diverse applications for these metals have made them increasingly important and visible to the world. This paper presents the working of shape memory alloys , the phenomenon of super-elasticity and applications of these alloys. Keywords:Austenite, martensite, super-elasticity. ×

Image processing techniques primarily focus upon enhancing the quality of an image or a set ofimages to derive the maximum information from them. Image Fusion is a technique of producing a superior quality image from a set of available images. It is the process of combining relevant information from two or more images into a single image wherein the resulting image will be more informative and complete than any of the input images. A lot of research is being done in this field encompassing areas of Computer Vision, Automatic object detection, Image processing, parallel and distributed processing, Robotics and remote sensing. This project paves way to explain the theoretical and implementation issues of seven image fusion algorithms and the experimental results of the same. The fusion algorithms would be assessed based on the study and development of some image quality metricsKeywords:Average Difference (AD), Laplacian Mean Square Error (LMSE), Maximum Difference (MD), Mean Square Error (MSE), Normalized Absolute Error (NAE), Normalized Cross Correlation (NCC), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Principal Component Analysis Method (PCA), Structural Content (SC), Structural Similarity Index Metric (SSIM). ×

The analysis is made to explore the Darcy-Forchheimer flow and heat transfer of Maxwell fluid over a vertical stretching sheetuniform heat source/sink. Using similar transformations, the governing partial differential equations (PDEs) are converted intonon-linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The resulting ODEs are solved numerically by Runge-Kuttafourth order method along with shooting technique. The outcomes of relevant parameters on velocity, temperature as well as skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt number are illustrated through graphs and tables. It is found that local inertia parameter, which is responsible for inertia drag, reduces the fluid velocity but adverse effect is observed on temperature field..Keywords:Darcy-Forchheimermodel, heat transfer, vertical stretching sheet, uniform heatsource/sink ×
