Abstract:
The levels of 25 trace and heavy metals were determined in 29 brands of soft drinks collected from supermarkets and grand stores in Kuwait using an Agilent ICP/MS. Comparison of the elemental concentrations in the soft drinks samples with the international maximum allowable limits showed that the mean values as well as the ranges of all the investigated elements in all the samples analyzed were below both US-EPA and WHO regulatedlimits of drinking water. It was found that there is no significant effect on the material of the containers on the levels of the studied metals. In addition, these levels were found much lower than those found in other countries.Keyword: Trace elements; Soft drinks; Kuwait; Nutrition ×

Enhanced Privacy in Mobile Online Social Networks to providing the location information to the User /server in the online location server. MOSNs, more and more users' location information will be collected by the service providers in mOSN. The users' privacy, including location privacy and social network privacy can be improved using the User Registration & encryption of the data stored into the server. It should aiming at achieving enhanced privacy against the insider attack launched by the service providers in mOSNs, we introduce a new architecture with multiple location servers for the first time and propose a secure solution supporting location sharing among friends and strangers in location-based applications. In our construction, the user's friend set in each friend's query submitted to the location servers is divided into multiple subsets by the social network server randomly. Location-based services (LBSs) are one of the most important components in mOSNs, which provides information and entertainment service based on the geographical position of the mobile device. The entity of users, with mobile devices, is able to communicate with other users and share their locations. Load Balancing Model Based on Cloud Partitioning for the Public Cloud environment has an important impact on the performance of network load. A cloud computing system which does not use load balancing has numerous drawbacks. Now-a-days the usage of internet and related resources has increased widely. Due to this there is tremendous increase in workload. So there is uneven distribution of this workload which results in server overloading and may crash. In such systems the resources are not optimally used. Due to this the performance degrades and efficiency reduces. Cloud computing efficient and improves user satisfaction. This project is a better load balance model for public cloud based on the cloud partitioning concept with a switch mechanism to choose different strategies for different situations. The algorithm applies the game theory for load balancing strategy to improve the efficiency in the public cloud environment. Keywords –--- ×

Digital watermarking is the art of hiding of information or data in documents, where the embedded information or data can be extracted to resist copyright violation or to verify the uniqueness of a document which leads to security. Protecting the digital content has become a major issue for content owners and service providers. Watermarking using gradient direction quantization is based on the uniform quantization of the direction of gradient vectors, which is called gradient direction watermarking (GDWM). In GDWM, the watermark bits are embedded by quantizing the angles of significant gradient vectors at multiple wavelet scales. The proposed scheme has the advantages of increased invisibility and robustness to amplitude scaling effects. The DWT coefficients are modified to quantize the gradient direction based on the on the derived relationship between the changes in the coefficients and the change in the gradient direction. In this paper, we propose a novel explicit image filter called guided filter. It is derived from a local linear model that computes the filtering output using the content of guidance image, which can be the input image itself or any other different image. The guided filter naturally has a fast and non approximate linear time algorithm, regardless of the kernel size and the intensity range. Finally, we show simulation results of denoising method using guided image filtering over bilateral filtering.Key words:Bilateral filter, Denoising, Digital watermarking, Gradient direction quantization,, Guided image filtering. ×

Guidelines about the cut, that is to be introduced in the flange of the beam section, are obtained from FEMA 350. Here, a G+15 storey steel building is modeled using RBS as a component in one building and regular beam section as a component of the other in STAAD PRO V8i. Time history analysis is carried out in this paper. Displacement, storey drift, time period and base shear of both the buildings are compared as the result. Cavitation is one of the most challenging fluid flow abnormalities leading to detrimental effects on both the centrifugal pump flow behaviors and physical characteristics. Centrifugal pumps' most low pressure zones are the first cavitation victims, where cavitation manifests itself in form of pitting on the pump internal solid walls, accompanied by noise and vibration, all leading to the pump hydraulic performance degradation. In the present article, a general description of centrifugal pump performance and related parameters is presented. This paper is regarding one promising technological solution – which is so called Thermal Active Building Systems (TABS) –for one of the most critical problems both in environmental and economic aspects, which is the raising energy consumption. Buildings are the principal application target of the solution once that population spends most part of their time inside them. Therefore, more energy is required to supply an increasingly demand in lighting, air conditioning, heating, electronic devices and so on. In this context, TABS emerge like a possible solution. To ensure the system efficiency or, in other words, prove its viability, it will be applied an environmental management tool (SWOT Analysis) weighting all the pros and comparing with its drawbacks, based on previous experiences in implantation of such system, available in literature. A basic theoretical background, which is extremely important to a better comprehension of the system, covering both engineering and environmental management areas, is presented on this paper. Friction Stir Welding is the process used for joining relatively softer material like aluminum and its alloys, using a non-consumable tool. The flow of material governs the yield strength of the joint in FSW and there are various parameters which affect this flow. The analytical study conducted in this paper presents rotational speed, welding speed, axial force and tool pin radius as the most influential of these parameters. This work is an attempt to study their effects on yield strength separately by considering maximum temperature generated in the weld zone as governing constraint and then finding and empirical relationship considering the weightage of each parameter in yield strength calculation. This results in the evaluation of optimal range of these parameters and optimal value of yield strength.Key words:Friction Stir Welding, Parameter Optimization, Weightage Allocation, Yield Strength ×

Water management practices need a fresh look in order to avoid water crisis in the next two decades. This essentially requires looking for proper management practices for growing economy and population. The water resources of the Lake basins remain almost constant while demand of water for various purposes is increasing. Water pollution as a corollary of accelerated industrial growth has drawn concerns over public health and environment. Water is required for different purposes like domestic, agricultural, hydro-power, navigation, recreation, etc. Utilization in all these diverse uses of water should be optimized and an awareness of water as a inadequate resource should be fostered. Water quality index (WQI) is precious and unique rating to depict the overall water quality status in appropriate treatment technique to meet the concerned issues. This paper elaborates on the WQI concepts and current scenario of Jambhulwadi Lake which will help in future as natural potable groundwater resource. In modern age, the decrease of available free land and increase of land prices along with the wide spread of urban area has made architects and engineers to develop the cities vertically. For vertical growth, the only option is to construct the buildings as high as possible. It is a task of a structural designer to make the desired building stand and stable throughout its life. There are various structural systems for tall buildings, among them diagrid system is selected for this work. Diagrid is an exterior structural system which resists the lateral forces by axial actions of diagonals provided in periphery. Statistical analysis of tall buildings in India is carried out and presented for buildings having height more than 150 m or 40 storeys. Parametric study and detailed comparison of diagrid structural system with respect to conventional frame is carried out for symmetrical buildings. In this study seven steel buildings of identical base area and loadings with different heights are designed for optimum sections for both structural systems diagrid and conventional frame in ETABS. Various parameters like fundamental time period, maximum top storey lateral displacement, maximum base shear, steel weight, percentage differences in change of steel weight, maximum storey displacement and maximum storey drift are considered in this study. A Diagrid structure performs well than conventional frame structures and increase in steel weight with increase in height of building is considerably less in diagrid structures. Keywords:Tall buildings, Diagrid system, Tall buildings in India, Conventional frame system, lateral loads, Optimum design, Parametric Study, ETABS ×

The seismic response of non-structural element placed on single-storey, two-way asymmetric building under bi-directional excitations is investigated. The response is obtained by numerically solving the governing equations of motion. The seismic response of the system and non-structural element is obtained by numerically solving the equations of motion using state-space method under different system parameters. The comparative performance is investigated of non-structural element placed at different places on single story asymmetric building and finding a best place for survival during earthquake. It is found that non-structural element at flexible edge along Y- direction gives less response of displacement and acceleration. The Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT) is a useful tool that separates signals-of-interest (SOIs) from interference and noise in non-stationary environments. This requires estimation of the rotational parameter "a‟ to rotate the signal to a new domain along an axis "ta‟, in which the interference can best be filtered out. The value of "a‟ is typically chosen as that which minimizes the mean-square error (MSE) between the desired SOI and its estimate or that minimizes the overlap between the signal and noise, projected onto the axis "ta‟. In this paper, we extend this concept to perform repeated filtering, in multiple FrFT domains to reduce the MSE further than can be done with a single FrFT. We perform this solely using MSE as the metric by which to compute "a‟ at each stage, thereby simplifying the approach and improving performance over conventional single stage FrFT methods or methods based solely on the frequency domain filtering, such as the Fast Fourier transform (FFT). We show that the proposed method improves the MSE two or three orders of magnitude over the conventional methods using L ≤ 3 stages of FrFT filtering.Key words:Fractional Fourier Transform, Interference Cancellation, Mean-Square Error ×

"In this work, we develop a new approach to active noise cancellation. Theoretically, we use a 180 degree phase shift of the noise, i.e. generate an anti-noise, to cancel the original signal. Here, we have designed FIR filter which is driven by the input signal and has the noise signal as the feedback, and output of which is the required result. The active noise control system contains an electro-acoustic device that cancels the unwanted audio signal by generating an anti-noise of equal amplitude and opposite phase. The original, unwanted sound and the anti-noise combine acoustically, resulting in the cancellation of both sounds. The effectiveness of cancellation of the unwanted signal depends on the accuracy of the amplitude and phase of the generated anti-noise.Keywords:Active Noise Cancellation, LMS algorithm, FIR filter, Simulink, DSP kit, Silentium. ×

The increase in the number of terrorist attacks especially in the last few years has shown that the effect of blast load on building is a serious challenge that should be taken in to consideration for designing of structures. This type of loading damages the structures, externally as well as internally. Hence the blast load should be considered with same importance as earthquake load. The present study includes the comparative performance of G+3 storey building subjected to blast and earthquake loading using ETABS. For four storey building using different input parameters like charge explosive, stand-off distance and layout of building the blast pressure are conducted and linear time history analysis is carried out. Comparative study for blast and earthquake loading is carried out for different parameters like maximum storey displacement, storey drift and quantity of materials. Safe charge explosive and safe stand-off distance are obtained for the RCC structure with the sections of structural elements same as per the requirement for earthquake resistance. Displacement is higher for the blast loading as compared to earthquake loading and very high for the storey at which blast load is applied. In digital communication forward error correction methods have a great practical importance when channel is noisy. Convolutional error correction code can correct both type of errors random and burst. Convolution encoding has been used in digital communication systems including deep space communication and wireless communication. The error correction capability of convolutional code depends on code rate and constraint length. The low code rate and high constraint length has more error correction capabilities but that also introduce large overhead. This paper introduces convolutional encoders for various constraint lengths. By increasing the constraint length the error correction capability can be increased. The performance and error correction also depends on the selection of generator polynomial. A fast and accurate document image binarization technique is important for the ensuing document image processing tasks such as optical character recognition (OCR). Though document image binarization has been studied for many years, the thresholding of degraded document images is still an unsolved problem due to the high inter/intra variation between the text stroke and the document background across different document images. The handwritten text within the degraded documents often shows a certain amount of variation in terms of the stroke width, stroke brightness, stroke connection, and document background. In addition, historical documents are often degraded by the bleed. Documents are often degraded by different types of imaging artifact. These different types of document degradations tend to induce the document thresholding error and make degraded document image binarization a big challenge to most state-of-the-art techniques. The proposed method is simple, robust and capable of handling different types of degraded document images with minimum parameter tuning. It makes use of the adaptive image contrast that combines the local image contrast and the local image gradient adaptively and therefore is tolerant to the text and background variation caused by different types of document degradations. In particular, the proposed technique addresses the over-normalization problem of the local maximum minimum algorithm. At the same time, the parameters used in the algorithm can be adaptively estimated.Keyword: Binarization, OCR, Thresholding, Adaptive ×

×Abstract:
Connecting the adjacent buildings with dampers not only mitigates the structural response, but also avoids pounding. In this paper, the seismic response of two adjacent single storey buildings of different fundamental frequencies connected with various types of dampers under different earthquake excitations is studied. A formulation of the equations of motion for model of buildings connected with dampers is presented. The seismic response of the system is obtained by numerically solving the equations of motion using state-space method. The effectiveness of various types of dampers, viz., non-linear viscos and viscoelastic dampers in terms of the reduction of structural responses (i.e., displacements and accelerations) of connected adjacent buildings is investigated. A parametric study is also conducted to investigate the optimum damping coefficient of the dampers for adjacent single storey connected buildings. Results show that connecting the adjacent single storey buildings of different fundamental frequencies by these dampers can effectively reduce the earthquake induced responses of either building. There exist optimum damper coefficients for minimum earthquake response of the buildings.Key words:Adjacent connected buildings, Non-linear viscous dampers, Optimum, Seismic response, Viscoelastic dampers.. ×

In this paper, a new formulation for power system state estimation is proposed. The formulation is based on regularized least squares method which uses the principle of Thikonov's regularization to overcome the limitations of conventional state estimation methods. In this approach, the mathematical unfeasibility which results from the lack of measurements in case of ill-posed problems is eliminated. This paper also deals with comparison of conventional method of state estimation and proposed formulation.....Keyword: Covariance matrix, observability, power flow variance, regularized weighted least squares, weighted least squares, Thikonov regularization. ×

Brakes are the key pieces of a vehicle that plays an active role in safety and performance of the system. The study of aerodynamic cooling of a disc brake in real working condition of vehicle is important in present situations. Brake discs get very hot quickly, so it should be dissipated properly through different modes of heat transfer. Contributions of these heat transfer modes are different in different type of problems. The cooling transfer rates are different in vane surface and frictional surface of a disc brake. Also the temperature varies in each small interval of braking time. So a transient problem simulation is important to study the cooling of a disc brake when a vehicle decelerates from a particular speed. ANSYS CFX tool is used for the simulation of this transient problem. Keywords:CFD; ANSYS CFX; Straight Ventilated Disc Brake; Transient analysis. ×

This study presents the results of a diagnostic survey on the users satisfaction with the public transportation system which enables access to a higher education institution (HEI), relating it to some socio-bio-demographic characteristics. The research instrument, based on fuzzy logic, was answered by 184 randomly selected passengers. The statistical analysis was performed with non-parametric tests (Kruskal-Wallis, Man Whitney, Friedman and Wilcoxon). The results for the level of satisfaction were considered reasonable and it was identified that the factors ''terminal/stops'' and ''comfort/service for passengers'' were the worst evaluated. It was also identified that the age of the passengers, travel time and distance from the terminal/stop to the origin/destination are associated with the level of satisfaction.Keyword: Quality; satisfaction; urban mobility; transportation systems; public transportation. ×

Performance of steel structures in fire depends upon a number of variables such as material degradation at elevated temperature and restraint stiffness of members surrounded by fire. In order to face minimal structural damage, limited casualties particularly in high rise structures and for the purpose of selecting suitable fire resisting measures structural response to fire need to be understood. Carrying out experiments on actual steel structure is not always feasible as it requires time, money, space and controlled fire as well hence the use of finite element software's like ANSYS is the best alternative instead......Keywords:fire load, heat transfer, ISO 834, thermal analysis, ANSYS, Global structural response of simple steel building. ×

Cloud computing has become an integral part of IT services, storing the application softwares and databases in large centralized shared data servers. Since it's a shared platform, the data and services may not be fully trust worthy. In this work, we have implemented an efficient security model that ensures the data integrity of stored data in cloud servers. The computational load of data verification linearly grows with the complexity of the security model and this poses a serious problem at the resource constrained user's end. Therefore to tackle this problem we have implemented a new cloud storage scheme which ensures proof of retrivebility (OPoR) at a third party cloud audit server to pre-process data before uploading into cloud storage server.Keyword: ............ ×

Nepal earthquake caused great disaster. This called for earthquake resistant structure for poor villagers who live even in single room houses. Generally these one room houses are RCC frame structures having columns at corners and beams at plinth and roof/floor levels. The structural rigidity of these RCC frame structures against lateral earthquake loads can be increased drastically by providing extra beams at lintel level throughout the structure. Both of these structures were modelled and analysed in STAAD Pro software under same loading conditions and by keeping all other factors same. The results of analysis showed that lintel level beam throughout the structure was safer by 19% than that of simple RCC frame structure.Keywords:........... ×

This paper summarizes the research work on the properties of hypo sludge when used as partial replacement for Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in concrete. OPC was replaced with hypo sludge by weight at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%. 0% replacement served as the control. Compacting factor test was carried out on fresh concrete while Compressive Strength test was carried out on hardened 150mm concrete cubes after 7, 14 and 28 days curing in water. The results revealed that the Compacting factor decreased as the percentage replacement of OPC with hypo sludge increased. The compressive strength of the hardened concrete also decreased with increasing OPC replacement with hypo sludge. It is recommended that further studies be carried out to gather more facts about the suitability of partial replacement of OPC with hypo sludge in concrete. Keywords:Concrete, hypo sludge, Compacting factor, Compressive strength ×

Caching has become an important technology in the development of cloud computing-based high-performance web services. Caches reduce the request to response latency experienced by users, and reduce workload on backend databases. They need a high cache-hit rate to be fit for purpose, and this rate is dependent on the cache management policy used. Existing cache management policies are not designed to prevent cache pollution or cache monopoly problems, which impacts negatively on the cache-hit rate. This paper proposes a community-based caching approach (CC) to address these two problems. CC was evaluated for performance against thirteen commercially available cache management policies, and results demonstrate that the cache-hit rate achieved by CC was between 0.7% and 55% better than the alternate cache management policies.Keywords:............ ×

Three vegetable dyes are used for the study: anthocyanin dye from pomegranate arils extract, betalain dye from beet root extract and chlorophyll dye from tridax procumbens leaf. The anthocyanin and betalain, anthocyanin and chlorophyll, betalain and chlorophyll dyes are blended in cocktail in equal proportions, by volume. This study determines the effect of different extraction concentrations and different vegetable dyes on energy gap using dye sensitized solar cells. The experimental results show that the cocktail dye blended using extracts of pomegranate arils, beet root and tridax procumbens leaf, in the volumetric proportion 1:1, using an extraction at room temperature the greatest energy gap (eg) of up to 1.87eV.Keywords:Pomegranate, beet root, tridax procumbens, energy gap. ×
