  • An Analytical Method for Static Earth Pressure Distribution against Rectangular Shallow Tunnels Using Lateral Deformation
Farzad Habibbeygi, Amin Chegenizadeh, Hamid Nikraz
    [Abstract] [PDF] [Cite]
  • Abstract:

Analytical methods for computing the lateral earth pressure against tunnel is vastly used by engineers all over the world. Conventional analytical methods compute the lateral pressure in either active or passive state while the stress state usually falls between these two boundaries in many practical cases. Furthermore, using these boundary coefficients lead to either overestimated or underestimated results in design. Thus, a modified method based on the strain increment theory for calculating the lateral pressure against rectangular tunnels is presented herein to consider the amount of lateral deformation at each depth. First, the results for different values of overburden depth, friction angle and wall mobilized angle are investigated. Then comparative finite element analyses were performed to examine the effectiveness of the method. According to this study, the pressure pattern is completely nonlinear especially at the corners of tunnel lining. In fact, the pressure increases nonlinearly to about three times of the value at top. Lateral earth pressure decreases with the increase of friction angle which is in good agreement with finite element results. Overall, the pressure patterns derived by this method for shallow depths (less than tunnel height) are almost the same as those computed by finite element method.

  • Abstract:

The low power VLSI design has an important role in designing of many electronic systems. While designing any combinational or sequential circuits, the important parameters like power consumption, implementation area, voltage leakage and performance of the circuit are to be considered. Design of area, high speed and powerefficient data path logic systems forms the largest areas of research in VLSI system design. This paper presents a low power Carry look ahead adder design using Full swing Gate diffusion (FS-GDI) technique. The proposed CLA implementation utilizes improved full-swing GDI F1 and F2 gates, which are the counterparts of standard CMOS NAND and NOR gates. The basic Gate Diffusion Input (GDI) logic style suffers from some practical limitations like swing degradation, fabrication complexity in standard CMOS process and bulk connections. These limitations can be overcome by Full swing GDI technique. The proposed technique utilizes a single swing restoration (SR) transistor to improve the output swing of F1 and F2 GDI gates. A 16-bit CLA is designed and Simulations are performed by Mentor graphics 130nm CMOS technology ELDO simulator. Simulation results have shown a greater reduction in delay, power dissipation and area.

  • Abstract:

This work presents an effective approach towards reduction of steps in power conversion from solar photovoltaic system to load. When a Photovoltaic system is fed to an induction motor, it requires MPPT controller and an Inverter circuit in first and second stages since Induction motor works with a.c supply. By eliminating the Inverter circuit and employing a BLDC motor the efficiency of the system can be improved. The BLDC motor works under Electronic commutation principle with VSI embedded in the motor. A PV Panel fed to the "R" load with Hill Climbing MPPT is considered along with practical irradiance data. Simulation is carried out by formulating the mathematical model for the photovoltaic source, MPPT, Motor. System performance‟s are investigated under different levels of solar insolation.

    [Abstract] [PDF] [Cite]
  • Abstract:

Experiments on filled and empty circular thin walled Aluminium AA6063 tubes with varying L/D ratios have been performed to study load compression and energy absorbed for quasi static axial and oblique loading. Dependence of deformation characteristics and energy absorption responses have been studied. Energy absorption was measured from load-displacement graph obtained from UTM using MATLAB. Tubes were clamped at the lower end and axial and oblique loads were applied by applying a force at upper end with different angles to the centreline of column. Peak loads and absorbed energies have been compared for filled and empty tubes for same L/D ratio. Experimental results are used to determine energy absorption capacity due to plastic deformation of thin walled tube. The goal of the research was to study the interaction between the forming and crash response of Al AA6063 in order to evaluate its potential for use in vehicle design for crashworthiness.

  • Abstract:

The optical instruments design for binocular vision has become an earnest demand towards the arrival of an ageing society. It is necessary to measure how color difference between left and right images by elderly people, which the color rivalry occurs. In this study, we measured the limit of binocular color fusion in the normal vision and the cataract experiencing vision which is aiming to simulate the elderly vision. The result shows that the color fusion limit curve in cataract experiencing vision are very similar with those in normal vision. Compared with the binocular color fusion limit in normal vision Δλdn, the binocular color fusion limit in cataract experiencing vision Δλdc is approximately 3~39nm increased on the central vision, 4~22nm on the retinal eccentricity of 3°, 5~23nm on the retinal eccentricity of 6°, and 5~24nm on the retinal eccentricity of 9°. The results also reveal that a similar limit is observed in the range of 520~560nm in both normal and cataract experiencing visions, which might give some potential evidences for designing 3D equipment. In addition, the minimum value of the binocular color fusion limit exists at 590nm either in the normal vision or the cataract experiencing vision during all retinal eccentricities.

    [Abstract] [PDF] [Cite]
  • Abstract:

To bring the mandatory changes in feed preparation of conventional methods of gas solid reactions the method of pelletization is introduced. This paper provides the best case of balls which are sustainable to pressure maintained for gas solid reaction so that desired size and production rate of balls can be achieved. Pelletization is agglomeration technique which is beneficial with fine powder to improve feed preparation present in the gas solid reaction. This technique is useful to increase production rate and to reduce the difficulties which occur in production by mechanical means with heavy mechanical operating devices. Currently many of the chemical industries are using briquettes for gas solid reaction which consume extra power, cost and time. Hence this can be substituted by using pelletization and material science technique. Pellets should be improvised alternated feed preparation for gas solid reaction as manufacturing of pellet consumes less time and power. It has better surface area and porosity when compared to the briquettes. Few sets of experiments have been done to overcome factors affecting in pellet making and positive result are observed.

    [Abstract] [PDF] [Cite]
  • Abstract:

20% of failures in Gas Insulated Substations are due to the existence of various metallic contaminations in the form of loose particles. In this paper a single Phase Gas Insulated Bus duct with inner diameter conductor 55mm and diameter of enclosure 150 mm is considered. Three particles of different sizes assumed to be rest at a position, Power frequency voltages of 100 kV, 132 kV ,145 and 200 kV are applied to single Phase GIS bus. The motion of the three particles is simulated for different voltages using MATLAB. Effect of the three particles for power frequency voltage on particle movement are analyzed and time of collisions of the particle at first time is determined for various voltages. And also the horizontal and vertical distances at which the particles collide are determined for Particles of aluminum and copper of 10 mm in length and 0.25 mm radius, 10 mm length and 0.15 mm radius and 7 mm and 0.25 radii. The max displacement of the particles when each particle at a time is considered (without collision) are compared with the max radial displacements of three particles at a time by considering the collisions. The results show that the three particle collide at different points depending on the particles position , the velocity and direction of the particle changes after collisions.. The results show that the max displacement of particles is higher due to collisions as compared with (without collisions) when each particle at a time is considered.

  • Abstract:

The use of stone columns is a popular ground reinforcing technique for flexible structures like raft foundations, oil storage tanks, embankments etc. The stone column technique is a cost effective method of improving the strength parameters like bearing capacity and reduce the settlements. When stone columns in soft soil are loaded, it undergoes excessive bulging due to low lateral confinement. To avoid this excessive bulging, stone column is encased with geotextile. In the present study tests were performed with and without encasement of geotextile. Stone column is encased with geotextile with different lengths of encasement like L/4, L/2, 3L/4 & L. The tests indicate that the bearing capacity increases with increase of encasement length.

Noise is undesirable sound caused by industrial and human activities that are detrimental to quality of an individual. Long term exposure to noise may induce physiological, psychological and behavioral changes. In the present study, different environmental backdrops of Secunderabad is selected as a case study to assess ambient noise levels generated by industrial and traffic activities. The average equivalent noise levels Leq at different locations of Trimulgherry (Commercial and Residential) area and the other Jeedimetla, an industrial corridor were measured for a period of one month. The noise level indices (L10, L50, L90) and Traffic Noise Index (TNI), Noise Climate (NC), Noise pollution Level (Lnp) were calculated. Leq. at two study locations have reported higher values during day and night average noise levels along with all the other Indices (TNI and Lnp). The higher value is due to increase of vehicles, industrial and human activities. The calculated Leq was predicted by using Calixto model and the regression between Observed and Calculated Leq has shown good value of correlation coefficient (R2) for both the study locations.

  • Abstract:

In electrical and electronic industry due to miniaturization of electronic components heat density increases which, in turns increases the heat flux inside it. Scientist and many researchers are doing lot of work in this field for thermal management of devices. Heat pipe is a device that is used in electronic circuit (micro and power electronics), spacecraft & electrical components for cooling purpose. It is based on the principle of evaporation and condensation of working fluid. Heat pipe made up of three main parts are evaporator, adiabatic and condenser sections. In this working fluid vaporise at evaporator and transfers heat to condenser by adiabatic section where heat release to surrounding. Vapour flows possible from evaporator to condenser section due to vapour pressure difference exist between them. Use of heat pipe material, type of working fluid & its property, wick structure, orientation, filled ratio, operating condition, dimensions of pipe has a prominent effect on heat pipe performance. Variation of these parameters for minimum thermal resistance gives better performance.

  • Abstract:

In Semiconductor industry has witnessed and explosive growth of integration of sophisticated multimedia base application onto mobile electronic gadget since the last decade. The critical concern in this aspect is to reduce the power consumption beyond a certain range of operating frequency. An important factor in the design of VLSI circuits is the choices of reversible logic. Basically conventionally digital circuits have been implemented using the logic gates, which were irreversible in nature only NOT gate are reversible. These irreversible gates produce energy loss due to the information bits lost during the operation information loss occurs because the total number of output signals generated is less than total number of input signals applied. In reversible if the input vector can be uniquely recovered from the output vector and if there is a one to one correspondence between its input and output logic. This paper present a new representation of existing reversible gate in MOS transistor. The MOS transistor designing using a gate diffusion input. Those new representation of MOS transistor has a hoping future in design of low power consumption circuits and high speed application.

  • Abstract:

In this paper, the thermophysical properties of cellular Al and Ceramic Particulate / Al Composites were explored. Thermophysical properties are defined as material properties that vary with temperature without altering the material's chemical identity including thermal conductivity (TC), coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), energy absorption, porosity and relative density. The significance of cellular Al and AMMCs reinforced by ceramic particles lies in their propertieswhich are difficult to be available combined in other engineering materials. New cellular AMMCs that meet the needs of the required engineering applications could be synthesized by selection an appropriate reinforcements. Different kinds of ceramic particles such as oxides, carbides, nitrides, as well as carbon nanotubes can be utilized as reinforcements for manufacturing of cellular AMMCs. Thermophysicalproperties of cellular AMMCs consisting of Al as continuous matrix phase and ceramic particles as reinforcements are directly influenced by type, size, and geometry of dispersions, also the RVR. In addition, the constituents of ceramic particulate / aluminium composites characterized by different heat transfer mechanisms, wherethe TC mechanism in metals is attributed to free electrons, while phonons are primarily responsible for TC in nonmetallic materials, as well as an interfacial thermal barrier resistance influence effectively on heat transfer inside the composite and thus the thermophysical properties. In this paper, based on the literature review, thermophysical properties of cellular Al and AMMCs reinforced by ceramic particles were discussed.

  • Abstract:

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is the cheap and noninvasive method of depicting the heart activity and abnormalities. It provides information about the functionality of the heart. It is the record of variation of bioelectric potential with respect to time as the human heart beats. The classification of ECG signals is an important application since the early detection of heart diseases/abnormalities can prolong life and enhance the quality of living through appropriate treatment. Since the ECG signals, while recording are contaminated by several noises it is necessary to preprocess the signals prior to classification. Digital filters are used to remove noise from the signal. Principal component analysis is applied on the 12 lead signal to extract various features. The present paper shows the unique feature, point score calculated on the basis of the features extracted from the ECG signal. • Analysis of Ground Effect on a Symmetrical Airfoil
    Siva V
    [Abstract] [PDF] [Cite]
  • Abstract:

A Detailed Study and Computational Fluid Dynamics investigation was conducted to ascertain and highlight the different ways in which ground effect phenomena are present around a symmetrical aerofoil-NACA 0015- when in close proximity to the ground. The trends in force and flow field behaviour were observed at various ground clearances, for different angle of attack. The analysis was carried out by varying the angle of attack from 00 to 100 and ground clearance of the trailing edge from minimum possible value to one chord length. It was found that high values of pressure coefficient are obtained on the lower surface when the airfoil is close to the ground. This region of high pressure extended almost over the entire lower surface for higher angles of attack. As a result, higher values of lift coefficient are obtained when the airfoil is close to the ground. The flow accelerates over the airfoil due to flow diversion from the lower side and higher mean velocity is observed near the suction peak location. The pressure distribution on the upper surface did not change significantly with ground clearance for higher angles of attack. The lift was found to drop at lower angles of attack at some values of ground clearance due to suction effect on the lower surface as the result of formation of a convergent–divergent passage between the airfoil and the ground plate. The values of drag coefficient were also noted for different ground clearance, which is found to be decreasing as the airfoil is approaching to a closer ground clearance. This ground effect is analyzed using FLUENT 5/6 code.

  • Abstract:

The cascaded multilevel inverter (CMLI) has gained much attention in recent years due to its advantages in high voltage and high power with low harmonics applications. A standard cascaded multilevel inverter requires n DC sources for 2n+1levels at the output, where n is the number of inverter stages. This paper presents a topology to control cascaded multilevel inverter that is implemented with multiple DC sources to get 2"+1_ 1 levels. Without using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique, the firing circuit can be implemented using Microcontroller which greatly reduces the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and switching losses. To develop the model of a cascaded hybrid multilevel inverter, a simulation is done based on MATLAB/SIMULINK software and hardware implementation was also done. Their integration makes the design and analysis of a hybrid multilevel inverter more complete and detailed.

  • Turbulent Heat Transfer from a Flat Plate Placed Downstream of a Fence

    [Abstract] [PDF] [Cite]
  • Abstract:

This paper presents an experimental study of the heat transfer and flow friction for turbulent flows of air over a heated flat plate mounted downstream of a fence. A rectangular brass plate is attached to a heating unit and fixed inside the test section of a subsonic wind tunnel. A number of non-metallic fences with different heights are used separately to promote turbulence over the plate. A series of experiments are conducted to examine the following parameters: fence height to plate length ratio (H/L), the distance between the fence and plate relative to plate length (S/L) and the Reynolds number, which is calculated based on the stream wise length of the plate (1.5×105≤ ReL≤ 4.5×105). The first set of the results, which is obtained for the case of the flat plate without a fence, satisfied with other published results. The results in the cases of the plate placed downstream of a fence revealed that the Nusselt number and friction factor are critically dependent on the fence height and the distance between the fence and the plate. A maximum Nusselt number enhancement ratio of 1.7 was achieved corresponding to a friction factor ratio of 2.5. New correlation was obtained for the thermal efficiency (η) based on the Nusselt number enhancement ratio and friction factor ratio at different arrangements of the considered parameters.

  • Abstract:

Power Quality is a major consideration in all office equipments, industries and residential home appliances. Harmonics play a vital role in power quality issues. A harmonic is generated and deteriorating the quality of power due to non-linear load, which is connected to the electrical system. Based upon the load, there will be an increase in harmonic voltage and currents in the system, which will affect the whole system. The limitations for harmonic voltages and harmonic currents have defined in IEEE 519 and IEC standards. That limitation can be achieved by using shunt Active Power Filters. This paper deals on shunt active power filter with PI controller. Shunt active power filter (SAPF) is designed by employing voltage source inverter with pulse width modulation (PWM). For R-L non linear load this harmonic mitigation is done. The MATLAB / SIMULINK model of this system is simulated and results are obtained through THD analysis.

In this paper a simulation based study is presented for a PV panel under partial shading condition with bypass diode and without bypass diode. In a solar photovoltaic array, it is possible that shadow may fall over some of its cells. Under partial shading conditions the PV characteristic gets more complex with multiple peaks. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the effects that partial shading can cause in a PV array. This is done by simulation using Matlab/Simscape. The characteristics of PV array are compared under partial shading and uniform irradiation. PV array system is made up of 18 cells in order to show two conditions, one where there is no partial shading and one containing partial shading. This paper shows the changes in characteristics while it is compared with shaded and un-shaded conditions. All the results are shown in graphical forms to illustrate the results. MANET (Wireless Mobile Ad-hoc Network) is a technology which are used in society in daily life an activities such as in traffic surveillance, in building construction or it's application is used in battlefield also. In MANET there is no control of any node here is no centralized controller that's why each node has its own routing capability. And each node act as device and its change its connection to other devices. The main problem of today's MANET is a security, because there is no any centralized controller. Our main aim is that we protect them from DDOS attack in terms of flooding through messages, packet drop, end to end delay and energy dropping etc. For that we are applying many techniques for saving energy of nodes and identifying malicious node and types of DDOS attack and in this paper we are discussing this technique.

    [Abstract] [PDF] [Cite]
  • Abstract:

This paper deals with Bayesian and non-Bayesian methods for estimating parameters of the bivariate Pareto (BP) distribution based on censored samples are considered with shape parameters λ and known scale parameter β. The maximum likelihood estimators MLE of the unknown parameters are derived. The Bayes estimators are obtained with respect to the squared error loss function and the prior distributions allow for prior dependence among the components of the parameter vector. .Posterior distributions for parameters of interest are derived and their properties are described. If the scale parameter is known, the Bayes estimators of the unknown parameters can be obtained in explicit forms under the assumptions of independent priors. An extensive computer simulation is used to compare the performance of the proposed estimators using MathCAD (14).

  • Abstract:

The present paper is on the analysis of surface roughness characteristics Ra, Rq and Rz during the machining of medium carbon steel EN19. The experiments have been done under dry environment by using a coated carbide tool. For the optimization of process parameters Taguchi based Grey Relational Grade method was used. Taguchi's standard L9 Orthogonal Array was used for conducting the experiments. From the Grey analysis, optimal parametric combination for multi-responses (Ra, Rq and Rz) was found at cutting speed: 225 mm/min, feed: 0.05 mm/rev and depth of cut: 0.4 mm respectively. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for analyse the influence of process parameters on multi responses. From the analysis it is concluded that, speed has high influence (F= 34.18, P= 0.025<0.05) in getting the optimized values of multi responses and the depth of cut has very low influence (F= 1.34, P=0.427>0.05). Regression models were developed for Ra, Rq and Rz, which are very significant parameters from contact stiffness, fatigue strength and surface wear point of view. The models prepared were highly significant because they have high coefficient of correlation values (R2 =0.992, 0.987 and 0.982 for Ra, Rq and Rz respectively). Hence, the models can be used for accurate prediction of surface roughness characteristics.

  • Abstract:

Optimization of machining parameters is valuable to maintain the accuracy of the components and to minimize the cost of machining. Surface finish is an important measure for the quality of the machined parts. The present work is an experimental investigation to study the effect of machining parameters on Material Removal Rate and Surface Roughness in dry turning of medium carbon steel EN19. Taguchi's single objective optimization method was used to find the effect of input parameters on the responses. The experiments were conducted as per Taguchi's L9 Orthogonal Array on CNC lathe under dry conditions. Cutting parameters of speed, feed and depth of cut were taken as inputs and machining was done by PVD TiAlN tool. Regression models for the responses were prepared by using MINITAB-16 software. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to find the influence of machining parameters on the responses. From the ANOVA results, it is clear that speed has high influence followed by feed and depth of cut has very low influence in achieving the optimum values for both Material Removal Rate and Surface Roughness. Finally, experimental and Regression values of responses were compared. From the results, it is found that both the values are close to each other hence, the regression models prepared were more accurate and adequate. Percentage of errors between experimental and regression values were calculated and they found in the range of ±0.20.

More methods have been proposed to deal with forecasting problems using fuzzy time series. In this paper, our objective was to apply the response test to a population already known to have long-term hypothalamo–pituitary–adrenocortical (HPA) axis dysregulation. We hypothesized that the free cortisol response to waking, believed to be genetically influenced, would be elevated in a significant percent age of cases, regard less of the afternoon Dexamethasone Suppression Test (DST) value based on fuzzy time series and genetic algorithms. • Abstract:

This work is aimed at enriching a research theme, focused on exploiting the performance in a human-CNC machine interface (HCMI) environment. A salient contribution of this research effort is focused on adopting the concept of load cell for the system of human-performance measurement. The developed novel system is capable of measuring cognitive and motor action responses simultaneously. The performance measurement system designed for this work may be replicated for other fields where systems are operated through control panels and also where responses of mentally retarded human-beings (or the human beings with the symptoms of Alzheimer disease) are to be observed and evaluated. Research relevance: The research methodology designed in this work can be directly applied to the practical field to evaluate the performance in various human- panel operated system interface environments. This work suggests that those responsible for the function and operation of CNC-machines workstations would have to redesign the system to reduce injuries, as far as musculoskeletal and other related problems are concerned. The present work can be quite useful for the system designers of tomorrow.

    [Abstract] [PDF] [Cite]
  • Abstract:

A nine-switch power converter having two sets of out-put terminals was recently proposed in place of the traditional back-to-back power converter that uses 12 switches in total. The nine-switch converter has already been proven to have certain advantages, in addition to its component saving topological feature. Despite these advantages, the nine-switch converter has so far found limited applications due to its many perceived performance tradeoffs like requiring an oversized dc-link capacitor, limited amplitude sharing, and constrained phase shift between its two sets of output terminals. Instead of accepting these tradeoffs as limitations, a nineswitch power conditioner is proposed here that virtually "converts" most of these topological short comings into interesting performance advantages. Aiming further to reduce its switching losses, an appropriate discontinuous modulation scheme is proposed and studied here in detail to doubly ensure that maxi-mal reduction of commutations is achieved. With an appropriately designed control scheme then incorporated, the nine-switch converter is shown to favorably raise the overall power quality in experiment, hence justifying its role as a power conditioner at a reduced semiconductor cost.

  • Abstract:

In the recent decades, the construction of tunnels has been increased vastly in all over the world. Despite all the efforts have been put into the geotechnical investigation, determining the precise and reliable design parameters is a difficult task to accomplish. Therefore, using back analysis techniques to modify geotechnical parameters and optimize the design of initial and final supports is more effective and even less expensive nowadays. In this paper, the results of monitoring and instrumentation of Isfahan subway have been investigated. Moreover, two important parameters for stability analysis, the modulus of elasticity of rock mass and the coefficient of the lateral earth pressure, are modified based on the measured convergence by using the direct method. Results show the Young modulus of rock mass and the lateral earth coefficient are less than the initial values from geotechnical investigation.

    [Abstract] [PDF] [Cite]
  • Abstract:

One of the most difficult tasks of the patrol administrators is allocation of manpower; i.e. determining the. most effective level of operational manpower for patrol tasks. Typically, administrators resolve the allocation problem by relying on prior statistical data and by employing subjective analysis. In general, only limited systematic analyses have been applied to the problem. This thesis presents a non linear goal programming model for allocating patrolmen to road segments within a patrol region. The model is demonstrated via a case example of the East section of Visakhapatnam. The results of the model are valuable to the patrol administrator for considering departmental goals and priority structure, in addition to available historical data, in the assignment of patrol manpower for a given urban area.

  • Abstract:

Nowadays it is widely accepted that remote sensing is an efficient way of large data management philosophy. In this paper, we present a future view of the big data collection by synthetic aperture radiometry as a passive microwave remote sensing towards building a global monitoring system. Since the collected data may not have any value, it is mandatory to analyses these data in order to get valuable and beneficial information with respect to their base data. The collected data by synthetic aperture radiometry is one of the high resolution earth observation, these data will be an intensive problems, Meanwhile, Synthetic Aperture Radar able to work in several bands, X, C, S, L and P-band. The important role of synthetic aperture radiometry is how to collect data from areas with inadequate network infrastructures where the ground network facilities were destroyed. The future concern is to establish a new global data management system, which is supported by the groups of international teams working to develop technology based on international regulations. There is no doubt that the existing techniques are so limited to solve big data problems totally. There is a lot of work towards improving 2- D and 3-D SAR to get better resolution.

  • Abstract:

An intrusion detection system (IDS) is an ad hoc security solution to protect flawed computer systems. It works like a burglar alarm that goes off if someone tampers with or manages to get past other security mechanisms such as authentication mechanisms and firewalls. An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is a device or a software application that monitors network or system activities for malicious activities or policy violations and produces reports to a management station.Intrusion Detection System (IDS) has been used as a vital instrument in defending the network from this malicious or abnormal activity..In this paper we are comparing host based and network based IDS and various types of attacks possible on IDS.

  • Biogas Production Enhancement from Mixed Animal Wastes at Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion

    [Abstract] [PDF] [Cite]
  • Abstract:

In this work, the effect of mixing ratio of cattle dung (CD) and poultry droppings (PD) on biogas generation was determined. Mixtures of various CD: PD ratios (100% : 0%; 50% : 50%; 60% : 40%; 80% : 20% and 0% : 100%) were prepared, analyzed and then aerobically digested for a period of 40 days. For each mixture, fermentation was carried out in a 20 L capacity digester. Results showed that biogas was obtained from the digestion of CD and PD alone, showing the biogas from CD was several times larger than that from PD. Furthermore, the resulted biogas yields from mixtures were found a function of the CD : PD ratio, the yield from the ratio 80 : 20 was the maximum. Biogas yields from the prepared mixtures were found and arranged from larger to lower in the form of (CD : PD) ratios as follow: 80% : 20%; 100% : 0.0%; 60% : 40%; 0.0% : 100%;50% : 50%. Addition of CD to PD enhances the PD production of biogas, while addition of a small portion of PD to CD gave the maximum yield, a result not determined in literature. In other hand, larger additions of PD to CD reduced the biogas yield. The effect of pH was also determined and found better around 7.0. These results are in agreement with research work in literature.

  • Abstract:

This paper focuses on the works of designing a small scale wind turbine at arbitrary conditions and analyzing the structural integrity of the model via numerical simulation. The project interests are limited to geometric design of turbine blade, optimizationandaerodynamicaswellasstructuralanalysis.Design of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) blade particularly for low wind speed areas is of primary concern to this project. The generation of wind turbine profile is based on Blade Element Momentum theory (BEM). Design parameters like angle of attack, tip speed ratio, aerodynamic coefficients, angle of twist, airfoil profile, chord length are addressed with the aid of this theory. A three dimensional blade is then obtained by extruding the two dimensional airfoil profiles to operate at a rated speed of 5m/s. Numerical simulations are carried out using a commercial CFD solver ANSYS CFX which reveals the flow structure and aerodynamic characteristics. The results obtained from the combined use of open source software QBlade and CFD computation assure that the 2.5 m long blade made of Polyester resin could withstand extreme loading conditions and provided acceptable performance with regard to stress and deflection produced..
